UPDATE: I bought them. More info tomorrow!
Found an ad on CL for some original 1968 Mag 500’s off a Mustang.
Would be a staggered width set. 14x 5.5 up front and 14x7 out back.
What do you guys think?
Obviously need some black paint in the middle and a polish to the chrome.
I’ve always wanted Magnum 500s for the Montego and these are listed as $150 for the set, going to try and get him down some. No idea when I’d be able to afford some tires for them but, seems like a hell of a deal.
My Montego with stock wheels/hubcaps for reference:
EDIT:I want these center caps at some point (they shockingly cost almost as much as the used rims, 125).

No, even though I love the style. Reason? 15” wheels tend to clear more brake kits (thinking longer term) but also have FAR more tire choices.

You see it in the picture right there? Those are 14’s, steelies with hubcaps over them, but still - 14’s.
It’s a muscle car, it should have sidewall. I’ve seen it’s sibling, the Torino on 15’s and it’s pushing it. The owner told me he wanted to go back to stock size.

Tire choices do seem to be slim, but Cooper Cobra GT’s are avilable for the 5.5 and 7 inch wheel.
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

Those will look really good on your car after you spruce them up a little.

I updated it with the center caps I’d want.

I think mine may be 14” but I got Radial TA’s on there right now. I also got mine off summit racing. Mounted Balanced, center caps, lug nuts. I think like $1500 in a staggered set as well.

That’s because you got that cash man
Radial TA’s are available for these size wheels too.
I think it would be a real nice upgrade.
I may be able to get a discount on the Cobra’s through my dad, he’s a Cooper distributor. Just have to find out if it would be more money to get the discount and ship to me or free shipping through summit at full price.

I’m trying to find out what brake kits would require.
The mustang II front suspension conversion costs more than the whole car cost me so if I do a conversion kit it’s a looooong loooong ways off.

Already got power front discs?
If you do get them, go for RWL tires.

I’d say go for it. It’s not a huge amount of cash so if you want/need to go to bigger wheels in the future you won’t be out much. Fourteens and 70 series tires are what I had on my Torino back in the day.

It’s just strange to think of such a big car with such small wheels in a time where a Range Rover makes 20s look small.

Do it. Work him down as far as you can. Then do it. Ain’t many out there with the FoMoCo stamp. They will only increase in value.

GOTTA DO WHITE LETTER TIRES MAN
Absolutely. Only other option would be Redlines, those are pricey though.
No I don’t even have power drum brakes. They work damn well though.

Fair point on the cash situation, it’s not a huge investment.

Part of it is that it’s not as big as people think.
It’s only about a foot longer than my 07 Mercury Milan. The Jeep Commander is about the same length (and weighs almost twice as much).
Also, Range Rover’s are huge.

See, you don’t need 17’s like people are saying.
I think those are actually 15’s though.

That’s also a fair point on the FoMoCo stamp....which I don’t see in the pictures. He only took pics of the dimension and Made in USA stamps.
If they don’t have the FoMoCo stamp, are they not original wheels? If so that price is going DOWN

Bring it! My LT-1 battle wagon will politely sorta chirp it’s tires and then nearly silently fan-roar it’s way to triumphant victory ... all while blaring Led Zeppelin II on cassette out of 3 of the 4 windows that I can put down because the left rear one won’t go back up!!!

WELL I know I can tell you I’ll be listening to your Led Zeppelin because anything is louder than my 1 speaker AM radio, but you’ll be listening to my engine roar and my tires chirp at the start and again into 2nd gear.
And I know I’ll be listening because the driver’s window won’t go back up.
But I can’t leave the back 2 half windows down or my headliner gets beat up even more....

Shoot. I wouldn’t have guessed it that is was that not big. And yes, range rovers are indeed rather large.

There were longer variants (wagon and 4 doors) than mine (2 door formal roof). But remember in 1968, this was the mid-sizer.
They had the Marauder, Marquis, Monterrey all above it in size.
Comet was the same car, stripped down in 68 so it wasn’t the compact. Only thing smaller was the Cougar.
But yeah, everyone assumes it’s huge. My wife wouldn’t drive it for a long time and I was like, give it a shot, it’s the same size as your Commander just low to the ground (by comparison to her lifted Commander, it’s in no way low to the ground as far as cars go)

Not totally sure. It definitely should have a Ford part number in the casting to be original. If it doesn’t, it is probably a repro but it looks like a good one. It’s pretty hard to find nice original pieces these days. I learned that with my MG. Most original pieces are in pretty bad condition.

They look great and the 14” is period. Like I said, hard to find original parts that old that are worth buying. They maybe repros, but they will fool just about all. Good buy in my mind MM.

Thanks!
I don’t see a brake upgrade within the next 5 years anyhow so who cares, at $100 it’s 100% worth it.
Also I found out the goofy little space saver spare wheel with the expanding tire on it could potentially be worth a small fortune.
